Windows 10 Review - A clear sky after a storm, possible sprinkles. Part 2 (Cortana & Edge browser)

Cortana & Edge browser

Pros:
  • These two features make Windows 10 a major overhaul, a must-have, confronted with previous versions. Edge is much faster and more reliable than Internet Explorer has ever been. Edge's strict integration with Cortana is the best functionality Microsoft has introduced in years.
  • Cortana is a very fast search engine, When used with regards to websites like restaurants, or local businesses, it supplies helpful information (hours of operation, map, Yelp reviews, etc.) within Edge browser.
  • Cortana also allows to look up the definition of a word, or to have more information on a place. It supplies customized information such as weather and latest news relevant to your area with a click.
  • You can create handwritten or typed annotations directly on the webpage and take a screenshot of a webpage to use with other applications. However, it's still unclear at the moment how you can share such a screenshot.
Cons:
  • In my opinion Cortana still sucks as built-in search functionality. She tends to open a web search for everything, even when I ask for applications on my local computer, such as Notepad. She seems to be learning and improving as I use her but, in my opinion, OS X Spotlight runs circles around her, (especially within El Capitan), and could receive a major overhaul through its integration with Siri.
  • This is not a completely new functionality. Google Chrome has introduced vocal search years ago ("Ok, Google"). In my opinion, Chrome vocal search is more reliable and proven (then it's based on Google as search engine while, of course, Cortana uses Bing). What's more, Chrome has a huge add-on database, while no extension for Edge is currently available.
  • Like I already stated with regards to the Beta, Cortana needs your location for it to display relevant results to you. This raises obvious security concerns and allows Microsoft and other entities to more easily track a profile of the user's surfing habits, likings and interests. However, this equally applies to Google, too. It's well known Google tracks your web searches and makes them available to third parties, including law enforcement agencies.
