Get Apple iWork on older Macs for free (no piracy)

LEGAL DISCLAIMER: This blog doesn't support piracy. The workaround I'm going to describe is legitimate and doesn't imply installing any patch or crack whatsoever.

iWork suite is Apple's alternative to Microsoft Office, which includes three programs:
  • Pages (equivalent to Word),
  • Numbers (corresponding to Excel),
  • KeyNote (equivalent to PowerPoint).
If you bought a Mac after 2013, iWork comes totally free and bundled.

If you, instead, own an older Mac (such as in my case), you can only buy iWork from App Store at $19.99 and this, in my opinion, is unfair.

However, I found a legitimate workaround that allows to have iWork for free on older Macs, too.

Steps
  1. You can legitimately download and install an iWork '09 30-day trial version from Softpedia. Make sure to click External Mirror 1.
  2. After installing the trial version, run any program in the iWork suite and choose Try. You'll be asked for an email address; use the one linked to your Apple ID.
  3. Quit the program you had previously opened.
  4. Wait for a couple of minutes and launch App Store.
  5. Under Updates tab, you'll be able to install the updates to the iWork Suite.
  6. After completing the operation, you'll have a functioning iWork full version, updated to the current release. Enjoy!!
