How to convert a Jing video to MP4 without Camtasia Studio

Jing is a free screen recording software by Techsmith that allows to record your desktop.

It's a decent piece of software but has two downsides:
  1. you can't edit your video
  2. you can't convert it to a suitable format.

In fact, though this program does a good job, it allows to save videos uniquely in a .swf format, that can be converted only with Camtasia Studio.

Though the latter is a good program, I found a way to get the same result without paying $99 for it.

With Jing you can upload your videos to Screencast  (if you're not already signed up, you need to create an account for you to upload the videos) and view them with your browser, because swf files are essentially Flash videos.

While playing the video in your browser, if you use a different screen recorder, such as QuickTime for Mac or other alternatives for Windows, you can save your video in an AVI or MOV format for free.

That done, you can edit your video with iMovie or, if you recorded your screen with a program like ScreenFlow, you can do it directly in your program.

This way you can have a video file ready for publishing to YouTube or other media platforms, absolutely for free.
