5 Handy applications for your portable antimalware kit
- McAfee Stinger: This well-known portable application by McAfee, updated several times a week, may help quickly solve tricky situations. It should always be present in your kit.
- ClamWin Portable: The portable version of the well-established ClamWin open-source antivirus does a good job cleaning up very infected machines, detects most malware around and its graphical interface is very user-friendly, but it doesn't support real-time scans. This downside is no big deal for a portable scanner, and is more than balanced by its pros, so I would definitely recommend it. After the installation you'll be asked to download the definitions update.
- ComboFix: This application is very useful against rootkits and known malware. If an infection is found, ComboFix reboots the system to complete its removal. For very infected systems, a scan can last up to 20 minutes. A report file will pop up on screen at the end of the removal operations.
- Sophos AntiRootkit Portable: It's an absolute must for a security kit, because its detection rate is very high, can work along with your resident antivirus program, does a good job in detecting rootkits and it's reliable and stable. I'm used to scan the system with several security programs at the same time (which is against the best practices and I don't recommend, but saves me some time) and I've never noticed any freezes or slowdowns whatsoever.
- Spybot Search and Destroy Portable: This portable version of the worldwide popular anti-spyware software is a very powerful tool, able to successfully eradicate different types of malware (tracking cookies, spyware, viruses, Trojans, etc.). It allows to backup the registry before scanning and supports a Restore functionality to revert the changes made to the registry, should you experience problems after the last scan.
