Fix your slow WiFi in minutes (MacOsX Mavericks)

The problem

After upgrading to Mac OS X Mavericks, several users (including myself) have noticed that wi-Fi Internet connection had started slowing down without any reason. This problem is a hot topic and many users are affected by its consequences.

The solution

Several solutions to this problem (such as changing router channels) have been suggested in online websites and forums.  The only one that really works is to delete your WI-Fi connection from your Network Preferences and then add it back manually.

How to

  1. Go to System Preferences (Fig. 1) and open Network (Fig. 2). There you'll see a list of all your network connections.
  2. By clicking the Wi-Fi icon on top of the screen, select Turn Wi-Fi Off .
  3. Click Wi-Fi and then Advanced. You'll be shown your preferred Wi-Fi networks.
  4. Select you Home network from the list and remove it. Before removing your connection, make sure to write down your network password somewhere or keep your router configuration page open (you should be able to see your password displayed in it).
  5. Click the Wi-Fi icon and choose Turn Wi-Fi On.
  6. Your Mac will look for Wi-Fi networks; once you've found your Home one, in most cases you'll have to connect to it manually by entering your password.
After performing this operation I noticed a performance improvement, as speedtest showed a much higher download speed (Fig. 3).

Another suggested solution is to turn Bluetooth off, but it's not viable if you use Bluetooth mouse and keyboard.

Wrap-up

MacOsX Mavericks marked a step forward compared with the previous versions, but some bugs haven't been fixed yet. A coming software update is expected to be released for this purpose, but in the meantime you can solve any issues with a slow Wi-Fi connection manually.

The solution I have tested for you ensures a better performance, but I expect much more and better from Cupertino in the coming months.
